Following up on the great success of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” director George Roy Hill brings back Paul Newman and Robert Redford as two professional grifters during the Depression hired to outcon a con mob boss (Robert Shaw). The film is played out in distinct segments headed by old fashioned title cards, in a style reminiscent of the Saturday Evening Post magazine. The film is also noted for Marvin Hamlisch’s great adaptation of ragtime music, particularly Scott Joplin’s melody “The Entertainer.” The film was very successful, garnering seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. 129 min.
