Local historian Brian Carroll will lead us to see the ruins of the historic Strauss Cabin, one of the earliest cabins built in the Ft Collins area. The cabin was restored in 1997, but burned by arsonists in 1999. The cabin ruins were closed to the public from 1999-2012. The Natural Areas Department then acquired the property from Larimer County & cleaned up the site with the help of volunteers. In addition to the cabin, Brian may also point out some of the over 80 species of birds that use the habitat here (including American white pelicans, prairie falcons & cormorants) as well as mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, beavers, coyotes, foxes & deer. Requires standing as well as walking on soft, natural surface trails. ADA mobility devices are allowed. Contact Terry Barrett at tbarrettt2@gmail.com for more information.
