In his blog Dot Earth, Andrew Revkin of the New York Times “examines efforts to balance human affairs with the planet’s limits”. His topics are many and varied. Recent topics include climate change, world population, urbanization, protecting the ailing Monarch Butterfly, restoring coral reefs, and the plight of the polar bear. These are opinion pieces, but as such they offer a useful source to begin a conversation about current environmental and natural resource issues.

Class members will present and consider topics from Revkin’s blog and develop the selected topic to the extent they feel comfortable. Hot links are often embedded in the piece allowing the reader to explore the topic in greater detail. As opinion pieces, Revkin’s blog provides a beginning point, not an ending point, or a discussion. The goal is to explore each topic in an open and honest fashion. The views of all class members will be respected and valued.

Come join the discussion and explore the relation between human needs and the ability of ourspaceship, the planet Earth, to supply those needs.
