History = his story—but what about her story? Women have been largely bypassed by historians, their accomplishments ignored, subverted, or claimed by men. By the middle of the 19th century, women were knocking on doors of male bastions, venturing out on their own into unexplored realms. All over the country, women were clamoring for their rights; Fort Collins was a microcosm of that wider movement. In many fields of endeavor—education, medicine, science to name a few--, remarkable women have left us legacies which we will honor in this course. Putting the women into the context of their times, we will learn of the obstacles they faced and overcame, the barriers they breached, and the footprints they left. No book is required for this class, but every participant will do a presentation.
