The Play’s the Thing

Facilitator: Jim McCauley, 472-1104, Dates: Friday mornings, September 13 – November 1, 2019 Time: 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM Text: A full script will be provided of the three plays which will be read. Presentations: None required

Join your fellow thespians as we sit in a circle with our scripts and read a play by William Shakespeare. From one scene to the next, roles are assigned to each reader in the order of the circle. You could be a man, woman, boy, girl, or even a ghost -- "inappropriate" casting is the norm! The facilitator will not attempt to direct (unless you request direction), so you are free to interpret the character you are reading as you wish.

We will probably read at least three plays, starting with Hamlet. The other plays will be chosen by consensus of the class. There will be an opportunity for brief discussion of each scene before we move on to the next. A small amount of meeting time will be devoted to video segments of notable performances of the play being read or commentary and observation (by audio and video) by expert interpreters of Shakespeare's works.

Materials provided in print (or online if requested):

  • 􏰀  A full script of each play, formatted in a readable type face and font.

  • 􏰀  A brief description of the characters

  • 􏰀  A scene-by-scene list of the speaking roles
