Comedy as a film genre grew up under the brilliant writing and directing of Nora Ephron. What had once been the province of young lovers outsmarting disapproving fathers became the terrain of mature and complicated adults seeking love and the stability of committed partnerships. Nora Ephron’s books and films were based on her life experiences and those of people she knew.

In this class we will look closely at Ephron’s life through documentaries and interviews, experiencing Nora’s mining of her life and work. We’ll enjoy three of her most successful films, analyzing them in terms of the characteristics of the Romantic Comedy genre as well as Ephron’s creative process and interests. Basically, we’ll enjoy the magic of the best of romantic comedies while also looking behind the curtain, discovering how they were created.
