Course Description:

As you probably noticed, 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States as an independent country. The process of creation was long, expensive and bloody, and it probably would have been unsuccessful if George Washington had not been around to hold things together. During the eight years between the Shot Heard Round the World and the Treaty of Paris, Washington was often the virtual head of state. In the class based on Ron Chernow's Washington a Life, we will discuss events in Washington's life that helped prepare him for the awesome responsibilities he would assume. As a young man, Washington had a number of hair-breadth escapes from dangerous situations. If any of those escapes had been unsuccessful, our country would likely be a far different place.
