Old-line liberals Matt and Christina Drayton (Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn) have raised their daughter Joey (Katherine Houghton) to think for herself and not be blinded by convention. Still, they are shocked when she returns home from vacation with a new fiancée, African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier). To complicate matters, the young couple must also contend with John’s parents who are against the union. While Joey is determined to go ahead with the marriage, John won’t budge until all parents bestow their approval. The closing monologue by Spencer Tracy turned out to be his last scene. He died soon after the production. 108 min.
